Preserving Tradition - - - Embracing Change
These proposals for change to our building fabric and services reflect our vision to fill the church with activities based on the needs of the community, run by the community for the community. Have you ever given this any thought?
Over the past twenty years the civil Parish of West Monkton has changed from small and semi-rural (about 1150 homes) to much larger including local hamlets to large urban extensions (about 4600 homes). In the same period, changes to the church community have not reflected population growth.
After much discussion and consultation some proposals are emerging, but to be successfully delivered they need your engagement and support. Whilst previous surveys have shown a general agreement to go ahead in principle, it is important to stress that new ideas are emerging and being added to the melting pot. The purpose of this update is to share the general direction of travel and point out some ideas for consideration. Read on...
Below is further information on our projects some of which are inching slowly forwards, and the following is an update for you. Please be aware that any change in the fabric of the church is subject to faculty approval (similar to planning permission).
Also on the list but not off the starting blocks, maintenance/cleaning of the pipes of the organ.
Re-roofing the Lady Chapel – this roof has leaked for several years – and with funding raised last year and grants we are pleased to say this has been completed.
Thanks to community support with fund raising and a grant from Valencia Community Fund, these works are complete.
This necessary maintenance was noted by the Church Architects in the 2018 Quinquennial Inspection (QI) and was noted as urgently required in the 2023 QI. We plan to do this sooner rather than later as it is only getting worse as the years go by.
The boiler is over 30 years old, and no longer efficient or reliable. We want to avoid the situation of having no heating when a service or event is about to take place and for that reason the replacement heating system may have to take priority in our list of projects. We have received excellent advice locally on the various options. We would also like to move and replace some of the radiators - some of the radiators aren’t working at all, and others may need re-aligning if we remove some of the pews from the rear of the church.
If the pews to the rear of the church are removed, we could improve the servery area to be able to serve coffees and lunches more effectively. The area would provide a good social space for community events. The pews are at a different level to the aisle and heating pipes and some work would be needed to remove all trip hazards from the area. This might mean levelling and re-tiling or wood flooring, and re-aligning of radiators, and radiator pipes. Pews could be sold to recover some of the cost of removal. It might also be appropriate to remove one or two of the pews from in front of the Lady Chapel to improve the access to it when/if it is enclosed. This work is most likely to be addressed in stages,
We all agree that it’s time for a new system that doesn’t provide static crackling and rustling noises in the background! Time limited quotes have been provided by the original installer for a straightforward replacement like for like, plus additional options such as live streaming of events, if we can afford it. The more the additional options, the more the cost. We don’t have enough funds to commission any of this work at the present time, but we are applying for grants.
UPDATE - New audio system has been installed along with digital hearing loop.
Response to the update has been so welcomed and we have been able to use digital organ music when organist has ben unavailable. Visual facilities remain on the list, albeit further down.
These historic panels have been gifted back to the church and await mounting in an appropriate area in the church. They are rare painted windows unlike any of the existing stained glass and are desired to be on display again in the church. These windows are far to fragile to be installed in their original and secondary positions but we do however wish to display these stunning examples of Gray's work in a light box where they can be appreciate once again. Donations permitting.
There are regular meetings of the Churchyard working party, supported by coffee and biscuits! Daffodils have been planted alongside the path. A copy of the wildlife survey can be found on our Sustainability page.
These are all expensive projects, and it must be appreciated that once one of the projects is finished, the next one must begin - so the need for support in terms of time, talents, fundraising and finance is long term. Please let us know if you can assist in any way, no matter how small it may seem to you, we would love to see you. If everyone does a little, then the task seems less enormous and the gains to our Parish and community will be hugely beneficial. Taking part, making new friends and being part of a project like this can bring its own rewards. It doesn’t matter if you don’t come to church, we want to deliver these projects so that the church building gets used to the benefit of all.
We will be working on a business plan to be able to sustain the improvements and not leave the PCC in debt. It is important that the PCC should try to remain debt free so that further initiatives can be considered if required. Just a reminder – the church is open every day for your use. Do you love history and old buildings? Why not venture in and have a look around?
Do you have the time or some skills that you could offer this community project? Have you experience in running events? We particularly need fundraisers.
Or maybe your skill is In filling out application forms for grants - or can you help us to develop a business plan to support a larger grant application?
Even if you would simply be happy to help with making cakes or manning stalls, or maybe gardening and churchyard support? All offers of help welcomed. Please get in touch, make enquiries or to give us your views and ideas.
Roof works complete!
